Nicolas Cage reveals a secret he’s kept hidden for over 20 years.
After keeping it a secret for over two decades, Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage surprised everyone by revealing that he once turned down the opportunity to play the legendary villain Green Goblin in the blockbuster ‘Spider-Man’ (2002).
According to PEOPLE , this secret, kept for over 20 years, was officially revealed by Nicolas Cage on the red carpet at the Spider-Noir film premiere at the Regal Times Square theater in the US. The 62-year-old actor admitted that he had discussed extensively with director Sam Raimi the possibility of taking on the formidable villain Green Goblin in the early 2000s. However, at the last minute, he decided to switch to a low-budget film project called Adaptation .
Explaining his risky choice back then, Nicolas Cage said: “ I decided to make a different film. A smaller, more romantic film noir rather than a tragedy. But it was the right choice at the time.”
Despite missing the opportunity to be part of the Marvel universe, Nicolas Cage’s decision that year opened up a valuable new path for him. Not long after, the actor made a strong impression with his performance in Adaptation , earning him a nomination for Best Actor, after having already won the prestigious award for Leaving Las Vegas .
Although he didn’t team up with Sam Raimi as the villain, Nicolas Cage still offered heartfelt advice to the director before leaving the project. He recounted: “I remember telling Sam, ‘I hope whoever you choose to play Spider-Man will really grasp the body language of the spider, at least for a moment. Like when he’s alone in his apartment, crawling on the ceiling or something.'” This suggestion was later realized by Tobey Maguire and the crew into classic scenes.

Nicolas Cage: At nearly 70, he still risks his life filming Marvel movies by swinging on wires.
At the peak of his career in the late 1990s, Nicolas Cage was one of Hollywood’s most expensive stars, starring in blockbusters like *The Rock*, *Con Air*, *Face/Off*, and *National Treasure *. However, instead of playing it safe, he always prioritized unconventional roles to challenge his emotional limits and reinvent himself.
For Nicolas Cage, filmmaking isn’t just about heroes or villains; it’s an opportunity to explore the diverse facets of a character. This mindset has allowed him to maintain his appeal for decades and paved the way for his unique return to Marvel.
After missing out on Spider-Man and his role in Ghost Rider , the actor is preparing to return to the Marvel universe with the Spider-Noir series – marking his first television lead role in his 60s.

In the eight-episode Spider-Noir series airing in late May 2026, Nicolas Cage is no longer a young superhero but transforms into Ben Reilly – an aging, lonely, and weary private detective amidst the New York Depression of the 1930s. This is a unique project blending the world of comic books with classic dark thrillers. A novel aspect is that the series will be released simultaneously in two versions: a black-and-white version titled “Authentic Black & White” and a color version titled “True-Hue Full Color”.
At 62 years old, Nicolas Cage still impresses the crew by performing many dangerous stunts himself, including complex cable-swinging sequences. While admitting to feeling nervous every time he’s suspended in mid-air, the actor shows that his dedication and passion for the profession remain undiminished.
Nicolas Cage’s return with a rugged, wounded image in Spider-Noir is expected to bring a breath of fresh air to the superhero film genre, which is becoming increasingly saturated. After many ups and downs in his career, he continues to prove his unique appeal lies in his spirit of constantly experimenting and reinventing himself through each role.
