Swedish schools to be mobile-free from August 1, 2026
The Riksdag has decided that schools should be mobile-phone-free. The law takes effect just in time for students to start the autumn semester.
Several schools already apply rules that require mobile phones to be collected at the beginning of the school day and returned at the end of the school day.
But now this will be mandatory for primary schools and after-school centers.
We are not meant to have this machine with us, which destroys social interaction and normal play, said the Liberals’ Joar Forssell in the parliamentary debate.
The government believes that mobile phones in schools are a problem because they disrupt teaching, negatively affect concentration and can lead to conflicts between teachers and students.
With a general ban, teachers do not need to spend time discussing whether or not to take away someone’s mobile phone, the Riksdag believes.
The law will enter into force on August 1, 2026.
