Kylian Mbappe didn’t hold back the wish he had following the conclusion of France’s World Cup campaign after losing 6-4 to England in the third-place match on Saturday night.
Mbappe completed the third World Cup journey of his career, first debuting in 2018 then taking part in 2022. He shines as one of the best players in the world, especially at the striker position.
Mbappe racked up goals throughout each tournament, bowing out of the 2026 edition with 10 goals. His World Cup career has him at 22 goals, taking over the all-time spot over Lionel Messi. The French star reflected on the feat after the match, scoring his last two goals of the tournament in the second half against England.
“Leo scores all the time. Tomorrow he will score for sure,” Mbappé told Fox Sports after the game. “I just try to help my team every time to score. It’s certain that when you score so many goals in the World Cup it elevates you to certain levels but there you go. I would have preferred not to be the top scorer in history and play the match tomorrow. So I think it’s good for everything related to legacy and when we stop saying that I was one of those players, but today that’s not the first thing on my mind.”

Kylian Mbappe enjoyed an incredible tournament from an individual standpoint. However, he will have disappointment towards France’s fourth-place finish after the loss to England.
France ends its time in the 2026 World Cup with six wins and two losses. The team scored 20 goals while conceding 10 times, seeing Mbappe score 10 times. Ousmane Dembele followed with six goals while Bradley Barcola scored three times.
France will look forward to its journey in the 2026-27 UEFA Nations League. They are in a group with Turkiye, Belgium and Italy. Those matches take place in September, October and November.
