Erling Haaland’s FIFA World Cup campaign came to an end at the quarterfinal stage after Norway were defeated 2-1 by England in Miami. The Norwegian striker finished his first ever World Cup with a whopping seven goals, and his team was good value for money especially considering their win against Brazil in the Round of 16.
But well, the campaign has now come to an end, which means Haaland bids farewell to USA and will now turn his attention to the new club season with Manchester City. The 25-year-old posted a characteristic picture on X to bid the nation goodbye, claiming that it had been an emotional journey for him.
“Goodbye 🇺🇸 It’s been emotional!” he wrote under a hilarious photo of himself as he grinned at the screen with sunglasses on.
And well, he has every reason to be emotional. Norway were playing their first World Cup since 1998 and nobody expected them to do as well as they did. They initially qualified from Group I as the second-placed team behind France, who handed them a 3-1 loss as the City striker was rested for that game.
That means that Haaland scored seven goals in five World Cup matches after having scored 16 times in eight qualifying games to help his team qualify in the first place. Regardless, he seemed to have a thoroughly enjoyable time in the country, and previously claimed that everything, from the stadiums to the fans had been delightful as far as the hosts were concerned.
And well, it is not to say that his team did not go fighting. They initially took the lead after Andreas Schjelderup’s delightful finish at the 36th minute mark. However, Jude Bellingham responded with a first half injury time goal before scoring a 93rd minute winner in what was a dramatic loss for the Norwegians.
The win means that England will now face Argentina in the semi-finals, while Norway will look to learn from the experience and return stronger in the future.
