Beyoncé Tenderly Combs Out Husband Jay-Z’s Locs in Rare Intimate Home Video
“It was always a great accomplishment when we could finally break that wick apart,” she said.
Jay-Z’s latest hair transformation was a family affair. On June 21, Beyoncé’s haircare line, Cécred, uploaded a YouTube video chronicling the almost week-long journey it took to comb out the 56-year-old rapper’s locs.

The 44-year-old singer narrated the 7-minute video, which featured rare and intimate home footage that showed her taking down his hair.
“Everyone wants to know the details of Jay’s hair transformation,” she began. “Jay told me a few months ago that he was planning on combing out his locs for the Philly show with The Roots.” He unveiled his ‘fro on May 30 during his headlining set at the Roots Picnic in Philadelphia.
“I was pretty obsessed with Jay’s locs,” she continued. “Honestly, I didn’t really want him to cut them. It’s a lot of memories stored in locs.”
Throughout the family video, the Cowboy Carter singer was present for every step of the process—from detangling to washing. They also documented a sweet scene where he laid his head on her lap while she did his hair.

“There were times I massaged his hair with my hands for about an hour, or sometimes two hours for each wick, until I could gradually separate his hair with my finger,” she said. “It was always a great accomplishment when we could finally break that wick apart.”
“It’s not for the faint of heart,” Jay added.
The Dreamgirls actress continued, “After six days of removing his locs, we spent another day detangling and really deep conditioning. I blow-dried his hair [and] trimmed his ends before we washed it.”
She concluded the video by saying, “I want to thank Jay for trusting Cécred on his hair journey. He is forever the blueprint.”
In a previous interview with Essence, Beyoncé opened up about her own hair journey and self-care routine.

“It’s all about moisture for me—adding oil to my scalp and covering my hair at night so the oils could penetrate,” she said. “It brings back such great memories of my rituals as a child to maintain a healthy scalp. I wrap my hair up and sometimes sleep in some cute rollers with a net or bonnet, depending on how I am wearing my hair.”
She also noted the things she doesn’t do with her hair. “I try to avoid friction, my hair reverting, and using unnecessary heat.”
