Following the 2026 World Cup semi-final between England and Argentina, a moment of Jude Bellingham’s verbal sparring with Lionel Messi attracted significant attention on social media. Numerous videos were shared, leading many to believe the England midfielder deliberately provoked the Argentinian captain.
However, Bellingham denied this interpretation. Speaking to American media, the Real Madrid player stated that his conversation with Messi only concerned a collision during the match and was not intended as a provocation or personal attack.
“We were actually just talking about a foul. There was nothing bad about it,” Bellingham said.
According to the 2003-born midfielder, the incident on the field was exaggerated after short videos circulated on social media platforms. He believes many people only see part of the story and therefore make judgments that don’t reflect the true nature of the situation.
Bellingham recounted that the exchange began when the two sides had differing opinions on the referee’s decisions. He said Messi mentioned a foul where he wasn’t protected, while he responded that the Argentina captain was perfectly capable of handling the situation.
“I know people will come up with their own interpretations and make a big deal out of it. But in reality, it wasn’t anything significant. I think there was a foul before that. He said, ‘What about the foul on me?’ I just said something like, ‘You’re strong enough to handle that,'” Bellingham shared.
The England star emphasized that this was a common debate in crucial matches, with no intention of creating a personal confrontation with Messi or using disrespectful language.
In this match, England opened the scoring in the second half, but Argentina scored two goals in quick succession to win 2-1, securing their place in the 2026 World Cup final.
After the defeat, Bellingham admitted his disappointment with the result but still expressed respect for Messi.
“Playing against Messi is a privilege. I have no problem with him. Of course, I belonged to the losing team and that hurts me a lot. However, facing him is still a privilege,” the English midfielder affirmed.
